In June 1917, Mr and Mrs Chapmen of 3 Green Street, Ibrox, were informed that their son, Sergt. Wm. Chapman was awarded the Croix de Guerre for distinguished service during the Gallipoli campaign. He enlisted in September, 1914, and was twice wounded.
It was recorded in the Govan Press that he “is at present serving in Palestine.” Before enlisting in the war, he was an apprentice pattern-maker with ex-Bailie Fulton, Cyclops Foundry Co., Paisley road. His name can be found on the “Roll of Honour” of Summertown U.F. Church.
